Question & Answers - Liposuction or Body Sculpting

Have you dieted and exercised and there are still stubborn areas of fat that will not go away?
If you answered "yes," then liposuction could be an option for you.

Question: What is Liposuction?

Answer: Liposuction is a procedure to actually remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from your body. It is meant for body contouring and is not a treatment for obesity. A tiny incision is made and a suction tube is inserted through the incision to extract the fat cells. The result is a resculpting of bulging areas into more attractive contours.

Question: Do you have to have general anesthesia to have liposuction?

Answer: No. Liposuction is safely done in our office with the "Tumescent Technique," where large volumes of saline solution, local anesthesia (you are awake but relaxed throughout the procedure) and adrenaline are infused into the fatty area being treated. Then a small tube, connected to a vacuum, is inserted into the fatty tissue. Dr. Sigler moves the tube around under your skin and suctions away the unwanted fatty deposits to reveal a more attractive contours and a slimmer, more youthful you.

Question: Who are the best candidates for Liposuction or Body Sculpting?

Answer: The best candidates are:

  • in good health,
  • have tried to eliminate bulges through diet and exercise,
  • have disproportionate localized fat compared to the rest of their bodies,
  • have realistic expectations generally involving a 50% improvement and
  • an understanding of minor risks involved.

Question: How will my skin look after surgery?

Answer: Ripples, dimples and stretch marks remain unchanged following lipsocsuction. Your new figure will have more shapely contours. You will have some skin folds that will contract over time.

Question: What will I experience during recovery after liposuction?

Answer: After the procedure you will return home to rest. Gradually, you will increase your activity as tolerated. After 2 to 5 days you may resume normal activities. You may need to wear an elastic dressing, girdle or body stocking over the treated area to aid in the healing process.

Question: What areas are most commonly treated by liposuction?

Answer: Men typically have their "love handles," breasts, abdomen or neckline treated. Women typically have the following areas treated: hips, buttocks, thighs, stomach, knees, lower leg, cheeks and double chins. Some women even elect to have their fat recycled through a procedure called "lipo-aumentation."

Question: Is the fat removal permanent?

Answer: Yes! After puberty you do not create new fat cells. When you gain weight, you expand the fat cells that you have. Tumescent liposuction permanently removes fat cells to improve your body’s contour. If you gain weight after liposuction it goes to the fat cells that remain in your body. The localized fatty deposit that existed prior to lipsuction can no longer balloon up out of proportion to the surrounding areas because they have been removed.

Question: Will I need a second liposuction procedure?

Answer: Usually one procedure will be sufficient. However, some patients require a fine tuning procedure at a future date.

Question: Will Liposuction get rid of cellulite?

Answer: Liposuction is not a treatment for cellulite. However, many patients do notice an improvement in the appearance of cellulite after the fat cells are removed.
